How to recycle bottles and cans in Australia

At Coca‑Cola Australia, we believe that a sustainable future is one we can build together. Recycling is a vital part of that journey. Let's explore how you can play your part in keeping Australia beautiful by recycling the right way.

Don’t let your empty bottle go to waste

Container Deposit Schemes

Your bottle can become another when you recycle via your local Container Deposit Scheme.

Kerbside Recycling

You can also recycle bottles via kerbside recycling (yellow bins).

Our bottles are made from 100% recycled plastic*

In 2019, we transitioned all single-serve bottles to 100% rPET (the term used for recycled PET) in New Zealand. This means that all of our plastic bottles are made with 100% recycled plastic (* excluding caps and labels).

Get to know your recyclables

First things first - what can you recycle?
Australia’s recycling system accepts a wide range of materials, but the best way to help your bottle become another bottle is to recycle it through your Australia’s recycling program Container Deposit Scheme. Return your eligible bottles and cans and you’ll receive 10c per eligible container. We also include a “recycle me” message on many of our bottles, cans and cardboard packaging as a reminder to recycle.

Plastic Bottles

All our plastic bottles are recyclable

Glass Bottles

All clear, green, and brown glass bottles are recyclable

Aluminum Cans

Beverage cans are highly recyclable

National Recycling Week

Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (NRW) aims to educate and empower people to do the right thing when they’re at the bin. In 2025, Planet Ark is inviting every Aussie to #jointhecycle.

Most Australians want to do a good job when it comes to recycling. It helps if there’s access to the right information.

Coca‑Cola has teamed up with Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week since 2019 to help Aussies understand how to recycle and to raise awareness of Container Deposit Schemes (CDS).

Know your local council's guidelines

Australia's recycling rules can vary from one area to another, so visit your local council website to find more information. Most councils provide detailed recycling guides specific to your area, listing accepted materials and offering tips.

Investing in recycling infrastructure

Bottle to bottle recycling infrastructure in Australia is significantly increasing. Our bottling partner CCEP is involved in the Circular Plastics Australia (PET) joint venture, in collaboration with Pact Group, Cleanaway Waste Management and Asahi Beverages. They have invested in two state-of-the-art PET plastic recycling facilities – the first opened in Albury, NSW, in 2022 and the second, located in Altona North, VIC, opened in early 2024. Combined, the two sites will have a capacity to recycle around 2 billion PET bottles each year, right here on Australian shores.
